Resumo: No âmbito da Ciência da Informação, as definições são essenciais na criação de Sistemas de Organização do Conhecimento (SOC) do tipo tesauros e ontologias, oferecendo um entendimento semântico sobre um termo. Cada termo carrega o sentido de um conceito e uma definição bem elaborada permite estabelecer o lugar do termo na estrutura hierárquica desses instrumentos e as relações que possuem com outros termos. Este artigo apresenta exemplos reais de definição de termos em tesauros e ontologias aplicadas, confrontando os resultados de duas pesquisas. Para isso, aplica-se a metodologia com procedimentos descritivo e correlacional qualitativa. Nesse percurso, descrevem-se os insumos das duas pesquisas e discute-se a importância da definição de termos nos tesauros e ontologias. Em seguida, analisa-se o processo de construção de enunciados definitórios nos dois instrumentos. Na análise dos resultados, busca-se mostrar as convergências e as divergências existentes nos elementos que compõem os dois enunciados. As discussões e reflexões realizadas neste artigo evidenciam a existência de correlação de similaridade entre os enunciados das definições nos dois instrumentos. Da mesma forma, ficam claras as diferenças, em especial, no que se refere ao nível de formalização e aos propósitos distintos de tesauros e ontologias. Acredita-se que este estudo irá contribuir para um melhor entendimento sobre a criação de definições, além de auxiliar o profissional da informação em suas necessidades práticas, uma vez que apresenta os elementos e os procedimentos metodológicos que vêm sendo aplicados na sua elaboração.

Abstract: In the scope of Information Science, definitions are essential in the creation of Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) of the thesaurus and ontology type, offering a semantic understanding about a term. Each term carries the meaning of a concept and a well elaborated definition allows to establish the place of the term in the hierarchical structure of these instruments and the relations that they have with other terms. This article presents real examples of defining terms in realistic applied thesauri and ontologies, confronting the results of two doctoral researches. For this, it applies the descriptive and qualitative correlational methodology. In this course, it describes the inputs of both researches and discusses the importance of defining terms in thesauri and ontologies. Then, it analyzes the process of constructing definitive statements in the two instruments. In the analysis of the results, it show the existence of convergences and divergences in the elements that make up the two statements. The discussions and reflections carried out in this article show the existence of similarity between the definitions statements in the two instruments. In the same way, the differences are clear, especially with regard to the level of formalization and the different purposes of thesauri and ontologies. It is believed that this study will contribute to a better understanding about the creation of definitions and to help the information professional in his practical needs, because it presents the methodological elements and procedures that have been applied in its elaboration.
